When it comes to getting your dog in and out of your vehicle, those leaps up can put a lot of strain on your pet’s joints. Starting to use a ramp as early as possible in your dog’s life can prevent problems further down the line but also these products are ideal for dogs whose physical health isn’t what it used to be.
Some of the pet ramps out there are too small for larger vehicles, not to mention bigger dogs. That’s why it’s really important to find something long enough that the ramp isn’t too steep and strong enough that it doesn’t falter when your dog uses it.
I have been really impressed with the Hewitt and Blue large dog car ramp which I think far exceeds the features of some similar products on the market. In my Hewitt and Blue large dog car ramp review, I’ll be talking about some of the features and helping you to make a decision on whether this is the right product for you.
Advantages
- Easyglide telescopic opening for hassle free use
- SureGrip anti slip surface that can be used in wet conditions
- Suitable for dogs up to 110 kg
- Can aid in the prevention of joint problems
- Makes getting in and out of the vehicle easier for elderly dogs
Design
One of the first things that jumped out at me about the Hewitt and Blue large dog car ramp was how easy it was to put up. Unlike some ramps that are complicated to put up and take down, the Hewitt and Blue large dog car ramp boasts a telescopic design which allows you to slide it to the position you require. It’s really easy, especially when I compare it to the Pet Safe ramp I reviewed which was also telescopic but much more difficult to put up.
The ramp also has raised guide rails along the sides which help to keep your dog on the ramp. This is brilliant for dogs that might be a little nervous when using the ramp for the first time.
Length
The Hewitt and Blue large dog car ramp is a telescopic ramp which means that you can adjust the length to suit the height of your boot or car door. It’s got a maximum length of 182 cm which makes it perfect for slightly larger vehicles with a higher door. However, when fully folded back in, the ramp is just 99 cm so it’s pretty easy to stow it in the boot.
Width
I like the fact that the Hewitt and Blue large dog car ramp is wider than some of the other options on the market. If you have a bigger dog, some of the 40 cm ramps can feel too restricting. While this one is only 42 cm, that extra room can make all the difference.
Materials and Durability
The Hewitt and Blue large dog car ramp is made from reinforced aluminium. I love this aspect as it really makes the product feel stable and secure. For large dogs, this is imperative as the last thing you want because it could make your pet feel nervous.
On the surface of the ramp there is an anti slip cover that ensures your dog won’t slip when using the ramp. The SureGrip technology is not only very effective in dry conditions but is also suitable for use in the rain or if your dog has been on a muddy walk.
There are some plastic components of the ramp such as the carry handle but these are pretty robust and unlikely to break unless you’re overly rough with them.
Practicalities
One of the things that you have to be really careful about when choosing a dog ramp for your vehicle is that the weight limit is in line with the weight of your pet. I have a maltese so she’s not huge but having a ramp like this that can take up to 110 kg means that it is far more stable.
As well as having an excellent weight capacity, the Hewitt and Blue large dog car ramp is secure in that it comes with a safety strap. There’s also a carry handle which makes it easy to transport from A to B but then, it’s not the heaviest ramp I’ve reviewed at just over 6 kg so it’s easy enough to move around as you need to to.
Another thing that sprung out at me about this ramp was that it comes with a 5 year warranty. This isn’t something that you usually see on pet ramps and where there are warranties, they aren’t typically this lengthy. To me, this just reiterates how well built the ramp is.

Who Is This Ramp Suitable For
The Hewitt and Blue large dog car ramp is a robust, large pet ramp that’s suitable for all kinds of dogs. While the weight limit dictates that it’s made for larger breeds, the stability is just as suitable for smaller breeds, especially if they’re a little nervous about using the ramp.
I’d recommend the use of this ramp for preventing joint problems later in life so even if your dog is younger, it’s worth investing now. But for older dogs, the Hewitt and Blue large dog car ramp provides a viable way of getting in and out of the vehicle without causing pain.
The Hewitt and Blue large dog car ramp is ideal for people who don’t want something overly heavy. At just 6.4 kg, this is lighter than a lot of similar ramps but the durability and sturdiness is not compromised.
A Veterinary Perspective
Jason Haley 4th year Vet Student stated –
“Pet steps are a great household addition for any potential pet owner looking to maximise the health and welfare of their animal.
I would highly recommend considering Pet Steps for older age / geriatric pets and those suffering from various joint conditions. Conditions such as OA (osteoarthritis), elbow dysplasia and hip dysplasia are all too common in our older furry friends, especially in large / giant breed dogs. The benefit of pet steps for these patients is that they reduce the strain and pressure placed upon joints from jumping up / down from sofas / beds etc. Pet steps (although not treating the condition) will not only assist in preventing further joint degeneration (from reduced jumping), but also help to keep your pet as comfortable as possible, providing pain free alternative to reach their favourite areas in the house.
Another recommendation for pet steps would be for smaller pets (toy breed dogs / cats etc). Having pet steps present will discourage your pet from jumping from high surfaces and potentially causing self trauma / limb fractures, something all too commonly seen in Veterinary Practice. In these cases pet steps can act as a preventative measure for injury, something which is always advocated over cure in Veterinary medicine. Pet steps will not only keep your pets safe, but also reduce the potentially high veterinary bills by preventing injury in the first instance.”
Final Thoughts
After reviewing the Hewitt and Blue large dog car ramp, I’ve found this to be one of the most superior products out there. It’s ideal for dogs of all ages and sizes and as well as being massively versatile, it’s also incredibly stable.
With an adjustable length, it can be used with any vehicle including larger 4 x 4 or trucks. There really isn’t much I don’t like about the Hewitt and Blue large dog car ramp although I will admit that it can be a little bulk even when at its smallest. But it’s not so large that it won’t easily fit into your car boot.
