My Overall Rating

PAWFIT 2 Pet Tracker UK Review

The Pawfit was an excellent pet tracker that currently retails for around £39.99. However, there were some features that this basic tracker was lacking so the brand has now launched the PAWFIT 2 with full GPS tracking and a whole host of other features that make it one of the most effective and reliable pet trackers on the market.

I’ve been trying out the PAWFIT 2 with my dog, Lilly. While I’d like to think that I wouldn’t ever have to use the tracking feature, there are some other nifty things that this device can do that come in useful as a dog owner. For example, it’ll track your pet’s activity and monitor their temperature.

There’s a lot more to discuss and I’ll cover all of the pros and cons of this device in my PAWFIT 2 pet tracker review. If you’re keen to keep an eye on your dog’s location and find them quickly and easily in the event they become lost, this is the type of technology you’ll benefit from.

PAWFIT 2 Main Features

  • Real time GPS tracking
  • Sound and light tracking
  • Temperature and activity trackers
  • Voice training
  • Smartphone app alerts
  • 6 day battery life
  • 5 hour UBS charging
  • Waterproof design
  • SIM card with coverage in both Europe and North America

Track Your Dog’s Location

PAWFIT 2 - Track Your Dog’s Location

The main feature of the PAWFIT 2 is the location tracker. This is designed to help you locate your dog should they go missing or wander off. The system works using real time GPS combined with a map which you view using an app on your smartphone.

One of the things I immediately noticed was how clear and detailed the map was. The location of your dog is clearly shown using an icon with their name and photograph. As your pet moves, so does this icon and there’s also a moving icon to show your own location on the map. It’ll even show you which direction you’re walking in. Using this feature makes it very easy to relocate a lost pet.

As well as the real time map, the device also comes with light and sound tracking. Let’s imagine that you’re searching for your dog at night or in low light conditions; you can remotely turn on the LED light which glows surprisingly brightly in the dark. What’s more, the alarm can be remotely activated so it’s merely a case of following the sound as you get closer to your dog.

Monitor Your Dog’s Activity

PAWFIT 2 - Monitor Your Dog’s Activity

Losing your dog is hopefully not something you’ll have to deal with frequently. But the PAWFIT 2 pet tracker isn’t just a location tracker. It has other features that give you an insight into the health of your pet which I think is a nice addition.

For starters, you have the option to monitor your dog’s activity. Again, this information is all clearly displayed in the smartphone app so it’s easy to read and understand. You’ll be able to see how many calories they’re burning, the distance they’ve covered and the number of steps they’ve done. What’s more, this information will all be tailored to your dog’s breed so you can get an even better idea of how healthy they are.

The device also allows you to monitor your dog’s temperature. Now, while this is an imperative feature in understanding your dog’s health, I should warn you that there can be a degree of inaccuracy here. The reason for this is that, should your dog lie down and snuggle under a blanket, for example, this will give the device a false temperature reading. So, I feel as though you need to keep this in mind and don’t take those readings as gospel.

PAWFIT 2 Design

One of the things that really stood out to me when I was testing the design and quality of the PAWFIT 2 pet tracker was how robust it was. If you’ve got a dog that lives a rough lifestyle then you won’t need to worry about the PAWFIT 2 breaking. It’s incredibly durable. What’s more, it’s fully waterproof so, come rain or shine, you can still take your dog on an adventure.

Attaching the PAWFIT 2 pet tracker to your pet’s collar is a breeze. There is a collar attachment and you simply slide the device on, twist it into position and lock it. However, while this is an easy process, the PAWFIT 2 pet tracker is held securely in place so there’s no chance of your dog getting it off.

PAWFIT 2 Subscription

The PAWFIT 2 pet tracker comes with an initial cost of £49.99 which is a little higher than the original PAWFIT. However, you have to consider the extra features.

The main difference, however, between the PAWFIT and the PAWFIT 2 is that the latter requires a subscription. This is to cover the SIM and GPS tracking but I personally think it’s worth it as there’s no better or more reliable way of tracking your dog. It’s a small price to pay, in my opinion.

What’s more, the subscription certainly isn’t bank-breaking at just £3.99 a month for the premium option and £3.39 for the basic option. What you get with each is as follows:

Battery

PAWFIT 2 Pet Tracker UK Review - Battery

The PAWFIT 2 pet tracker comes with a built in battery that offers up to six days of life per charge. It’s pretty reliable although I have seen some reviews stating that it often doesn’t last as long as it states. However, you have to keep in mind that how the device is used will affect how long the battery lasts for. This includes things like the quality of the GPS and cellular signal and how hard the device has to work.

When it comes to charging, it’s so simple. The device can simply be unclipped from your dog’s collar and placed onto the USB charging station. To fully recharge, you’re looking at around two and a half hours so it’s super quick.

Additional Features

The main feature of the PAWFIT 2 pet tracker is the location tracker as well as that activity and temperature monitoring. But it doesn’t end there. With an array of other handy features, I’m actually surprised that this device retails for such an affordable price.

Audio ID Tag

If your dog should ever wander off and is found by someone, they’ll need to know your details. Traditionally, you’d have written or printed your contact details on your dog’s tracker or collar but this isn’t the most reliable method.

Thankfully, the PAWFIT 2 pet tracker comes with an audio ID tag which essentially means you can voice record your name, address, number and any other contact details on the app. When a button on the device is pressed, it’ll play your details allowing whoever has your dog to get in touch with you.

Virtual Fence

PAWFIT 2 Pet Tracker UK Review - Virtual Fence

Tracking your dog is obviously very important but there may be some areas he is free to roam so the last thing you want are lots of unnecessary alerts. That’s where the virtual fence feature comes in really handy.

It allows you to set a safe zone where your dog can play and, in the event he leaves this area, you’ll receive an alert. What’s more, it’s possible to set up more than one safety zone.

However, I should point out that, other than when you initially open the app during setup, this feature can be a little tricky to find. You’ll need to find the tracker settings under your pet’s profile and you’ll see the virtual fence located within those settings.

Voice Commands

When playing with or training your dog, you may need to use commands. But if your pet is too far away, this can be difficult. But not with the PAWFIT 2 pet tracker as there are built in voice commands that you can customise using your own voice. You simply activate these commands within the app and they’ll play out of the speaker on the device so your dog can hear and follow them! No more straining your voice!

PAWFIT 2 Smartphone App

The smartphone app makes it really easy to program your PAWFIT 2 pet tracker and get all of the most essential information direct to your mobile phone.

All of the features I have discussed so far are incredibly simple to set up using the app and everything is clearly presented. What’s more, it’s a very stable app that experiences very few issues.

From the app, you can activate the light and sound sensors and you’ll receive alerts for things like temperature, if your dog leaves the virtual fence area and many other things.

Is This The Right Tracker For You?

PAWFIT 2 Pet Tracker UK Review - Conclusion

The PAWFIT 2 pet tracker is ideal for pet owners who want a tracking system that has a lot to offer. Since there are so many features, it’s really all you need and is ideal if you also wish to monitor your dog’s activity.

However, if you’re looking for something simple then this probably isn’t it. While it’s easy to use, the PAWFIT 2 pet tracker is bursting with features and some dog owners may not need all of them. If you’re going to be paying a subscription fee then you’ll want to make sure you’re making the most out of everything.

I would recommend the PAWFIT 2 pet tracker to dog owners who need reliability, detail and a device that will stand up to all kinds of weather and the challenges of being outdoors since this is such a robust piece of equipment. However, I should warn you that the device is designed for dogs over 3.5 kg so if you have a toy breed or something very small like mine, this might be too large.

Final Thoughts

I’ve been very impressed with the PAWFIT 2 pet tracker and its wide array of features. It basically tells you everything you need to know about your dog’s activity and location and provides owners with a viable way of tracking their pet in the event they become missing. Yes there are other GPS pet trackers available on the UK market, and I would say the that the Tractive Pet Traker is the only alternative that comes close to the PAWFIT. Check out my article that compares the PAWFIT 2 and the Tractive GPS dog trackers.

With features such as an audio ID tag, remote voice commands and LED tracking, the PAWFIT 2 pet tracker is a complete safety system for your pet. If you’re looking for peace of mind then this device is something I’d highly recommend.

GPS Dog Tracker FAQs

Do dog trackers work without mobile service?

This largely depends on the device you are using. Some still operate when there is no service while others don’t. This is an important thing to check before buying, especially if you live in a remote area where network coverage isn’t always reliable.

How do GPS dog trackers work?

Global Positioning Systems, commonly known as GPS work by sending and receiving signals from satellites. This creates coordinates which are then sent to your phone as a location, allowing you to find your pet.

Are GPS dog trackers safe for my dog to wear?

As long as the device is not too heavy or your dog doesn’t feel uncomfortable or nervous wearing a collar then there is no reason that a GPS tracker would be unsafe.

How long will the battery last on a dog GPS tracker?

The battery life on your GPS tracker will vary by device. There are some that must be charged every day while others have a battery life of up to one year. What’s more, the battery may last longer when the signal is better as it doesn’t have to work as hard.

Are GPS trackers worth it for dogs?

If you want to ensure the safety of your pet and be able to locate them, should they go missing then a dog GPS tracker is a worthwhile investment. They are also great for monitoring your pet's excercise, distance travelled, calories burned, active and rest hours.

Do dog GPS trackers also work on cats?

Most dog GPS trackers are slightly too large for cats. However, there are some very small versions like the Weenect dog tracker that weighs just 25 grams. This may also be a better idea for smaller dog breeds.
