Are Dog Sling’s Good for my Pets Health? – A Veterinary Professionals Perspective

Jason Haley - Veterinary Professional
Jason Haley – Veterinary Professional

As a veterinarian, I commonly see joint and mobility issues on a daily basis, especially in older dogs who have either undergone orthopaedic surgery or have developed arthritis. Dog slings are a great tool for pet owners as they help to easily offload excess weight bearing on their dogs’ joints, which significantly reduces pain. This helps to improve the quality of their dogs’ lives while also avoiding the need to carry their dogs everywhere, which can be very labour-intensive for the owner.

There are a wide range of conditions where a dog sling would be appropriate, for your convenience I have listed some below:

  • Osteoarthritis – Joint inflammation and degeneration, typically associated with old age.
  • Hip Dysplasia – When the femoral head luxates from the hip (acetabular region).
  • Elbow Dysplasia
  • Patella Luxation – When the knee bone displaces, usually medially.
  • Septic Arthritis – Infectious inflammation in the joint (typically bacterial)
  • Bone Cancer/ Neoplasia – Typically Osteosarcoma.

Although a dog sling can significantly help to aid in supportive care for these conditions, it is important to note that they are not intended to be sole treatment, but can be used in conjunction with other treatment options. Please visit your vet for further advice on treatment.

Features Of The Tierecare Dog Lifting Harness

Tierecare Dog Lifting Harness Features

The Tierecare dog lifting harness is an incredibly affordable option at just £14.99, for the small sized option, so you could be forgiven for thinking that it didn’t have a lot of great features. But the opposite is true; this is one of the best value for money harnesses I’ve looked at and comes with everything you need to help your dog move around and more!

Materials And Durability

The Tierecare dog lifting harness is made from nylon which is a very durable material so there’s no worry that it’s going to rip or tear easily.

What’s more, the harness is really well made and offers a good amount of strength which is important when it comes to supporting your dog’s weight.

The inner part of the Tierecare dog lifting harness is lined with a sherpa wool fleece that’s four layers thick. Not only does this prevent the harness from bunching during use but it also offers incredible comfort. That said, my only gripe would be that it isn’t very breathable which may make it slightly less comfortable in very hot weather.

There is a buckle which is used when adjusting the straps and this is again really well made and strong. It certainly won’t slip and move out of position.

What really caught my eye about the Tierecare dog lifting harness was that it comes in a choice of six colours; black, red, pink, purple, light blue and dark blue. While looks aren’t everything, I do think it’s nice to be able to express yours and your dog’s personality a little and have something that’s pleasing to the eye.

The Tierecare dog lifting harness comes in a choice of four sizes between small and extra-large. It’s not the most diverse range of sizes I’ve seen but it’s more than enough and will suit dogs between 36 and 68 inches in length.

Ease of Use

Tierecare Dog Lifting Harness Key Features

In terms of using the Tierecare dog lifting harness, this is one of the most simple harnesses you’ll find. You just wrap it under your dog and use the sturdy handle to guide him and lift him as he moves.

There is an adjustable strap which means you can alter the length to suit your height and that of your dog. While I do think this is an excellent feature, I did notice a lot of people mentioning that the strap could be a little longer, especially if you have a smaller dog.

Other than that, there are no fiddly buckles or fastenings to contend with so you can start using the harness right away.

Practicalities

Tierecare Dog Lifting Harness Practicalities

The Tierecare dog lifting harness is machine washable and even comes with a wash bag to protect it as it’s cleaned. This is really useful as I have seen a lot of harnesses that require hand washing which is far less practical.

I was also really pleased to see that the manufacturer has thought about the owner as much as they have the dog, especially where the handle is concerned. Not only is it padded for comfort but it is anti-slip so you won’t lose your grip, which could be dangerous for your dog.

The body of the harness also features a reflective panel which is great if you’re walking your dog in low light, as you’ll always be seen, making nighttime walks much safer.

Frequently Asked Questions about Dog Slings

Are dog lifting harnesses safe?

Dog lifting harnesses provide owners with a safe way to move their pet from place to place if the animal’s mobility is limited. As long as you follow the manufacturer’s instructions and choose a harness that fits your dog correctly, there’s no reason it isn’t a perfectly safe piece of equipment to use.

How long can you use a dog lifting harness for?

You can use a dog lifting harness for temporary injuries and post-surgery. However, you might also use one on a more long-term basis for senior dogs or dogs with ongoing health conditions. If you are going to be using it permanently then I would recommend choosing a harness that’s as comfortable and easy to use as possible.

What’s the best size dog lifting harness?

Dog lifting harnesses come in a range of sizes and their suitability depends on your dog’s breed. It’s really important to measure your dog and follow the size guide provided by the manufacturer. Once you receive your lifting harness, I would recommend trying it on for size and, if something doesn’t fit correctly, exchange it for something more suitable. Using the wrong sized harness can be both uncomfortable for your dog and dangerous.

How are dog lifting harnesses used?

Dog lifting harnesses offer support to your dog when walking or getting up onto elevated platforms such as the sofa or into a car. They allow the owner to take the weight off the dog’s legs and are ideal for dogs with arthritis and other physical health conditions. Lifting harnesses are also suitable post-surgery and when recovering from an injury or simply because your dog has lost mobility due to old age.
