Weenect Dog GPS Tracker UK Review

Are you worried about losing track of your dog? If so, you’re not alone. As a dog owner myself, I have experienced that rush of panic when I’ve turned around and my pet is no longer where I thought she was. The problem is that dogs want to explore and as owners, we often give them that freedom by letting them off the lead.

However, if they make a run for it or even if they plan an escape from the back garden to  go exploring, this could spell disaster. But there’s no need to think that you’ll never see your dog again with such devices as the Weenect dog GPS tracker.

This is a very easy to use and compact dog tracker that’ll give you that much needed peace of mind. I’ll admit that it does lack some features but the ones it has are impeccable and I haven’t seen a tracker quite as accurate.

If you’re keen to know more, keep reading my Weenect dog GPS tracker review and I’ll give you all the details you need to know to figure out whether this is the right tracker for you and your pet.

Main Features

  • Embedded SIM card
  • Live tracking
  • Historical data
  • Recall training
  • Safe zones
  • Augmented reality

Tracking

Weenect GPS Pet Tracker - Tracking

The tracking feature of the Weenect device is, of course, the main reason you’re buying the product. What I loved was how accurate it was and on screen, within the app, you get information on the direction and distance of your pet.

What’s more, there’s a Super-Live tracking mode which gives you updated information every 10 seconds so you’ll never lose track of your pet when you’re in pursuit of them.

One of the great things about the Weenect dog GPS tracker is that it comes with an embedded SIM card. This ensures that you have much better coverage than if you were to use your own SIM card that uses a single network. What’s more, the GPS tracking works in several locations around the world so it’s ideal if you and your pet plan to travel. It is important to keep in mind that while the tracker works in most of Europe, there is no coverage in Switzerland.

If, for some reason, you’re unable to access your smartphone, there is a Weenect website which you can access from your laptop or PC. Simply login to your account and all of your history and data will be there as well as a live map so you can still keep tabs on your furry friend.

On top of all of that, the Weenect allows you to connect several devices to one account within the app. For owners of multiple dogs, this is a handy feature as you don’t need to switch between accounts to monitor your pets and everything is in one place.

Weenect Dog GPS Design

Weenect Dog GPS Tracker Design

The main selling point of the Weenect is that it is the smallest dog tracker in the world. Most trackers I have seen are suitable for dogs from around 3.5 to 4 kg but this one might be a better option if you have a very small breed as it weighs just 25 grams.

In terms of durability, the Weenect dog GPS tracker comes with a silicone case that attaches to your pet’s collar. This provides you with the peace of mind that, no matter what your pooch gets up to, the device won’t sustain any damage.

What’s more, dogs are notorious for exploring and that comes with some mess and moisture. The good news is that the Weenecet dog GPS tracker has a waterproof and dust rating of IP67 meaning it’s built for the challenges that walkies throw at it.

Subscription

Weenect GPS Pet Tracker - Subscription

When you purchase the Weenect dog GPS tracker, it comes with a 30 day money back guarantee. I think that’s a nice touch as it gives you a chance to get to grips with the device and see if it is right for you.

However, as well as the cost of the device itself, there is a subscription charge which covers the use of the SIM card. I liked the fact that there were several options to choose from. Unlike some of the other trackers on the market, there aren’t levels for the subscription that include extra features but there is the option to lower the monthly cost by paying upfront for a specific period.

  • £9.99 per month. Paid monthly.
  • 1 year subscription paid upfront for £69.99. That works out at £5.83 per month.
  • 3 year subscription paid upfront for £149.99. That works out at £4.16 per month.

There is also an option to pay an additional £2.99 per month to add on things like online chat and premium maps. However, what I didn’t like was that you cannot cancel your subscription after taking it out. I have seen some tracker companies that allow you to cancel part way through and receive a refund for any time you haven’t used. With Weenect, you can only cancel at the anniversary of your subscription. It’s also worth noting that, when you choose the monthly plan, you must commit to at least three payments.

Battery

Having a good battery life is essential for any pet tracker. I did notice that the run time wasn’t as long as some of the competing trackers and typically lasts around three days when it’s permanently running. However, it recharges relatively quickly; in around two hours which means you won’t have much downtime.

Of course, there may be instances that the battery doesn’t last as long. For example, when signal strength is low and the device has to work harder. It’s always best to check the charge before you go out but the great thing is that you’ll receive a notification straight to your phone when it’s in need of a charge.

Weenect Dog GPS Additional Features

As well as all of the features I have already talked about, the Weennect dog GPS tracker comes with a few added extras.

Defined Geofence

Weenect GPS Pet Tracker - Defined Geofence

When I have reviewed other trackers, I have seen this feature but it’s usually called a virtual fence. While Weenect calls it something different, the concept is still the same.

The idea is that you set up specified safe zones within the smartphone app and the device tracks when your dog leaves or enters these zones. For example, if you’re happy for your pet to play in a field or paddock behind your house while you do the gardening but know that beyond the boundary there may be dangers, this feature is essential.

It’ll send an instant alert when your pet leaves the safe zone and gives you a clear view of their location on the map.

Augmented Reality

I don’t know about you but reading a map can sometimes feel quite scary. That’s why I really liked the AR view within the Weenect app. This gives you a real world view with a pin that shows your pet’s location and it makes it so much easier to figure out where to go.

Training

The Weenect dog GPS tracker is not only useful for tracking your dog, it’s also a brilliant training aid. That’s because you can set up vibrations or tones to come out of the device itself. For example, you could set up an alert when it’s mealtime and train your dog to come and feed without having to go and look for them.

Is This The Right Tracker For Your Dog?

Is This The Right Tracker For Your Dog

I would recommend the Weenect dog tracker for people who need something easy to use. It’s a simple device that provides you with accurate information on where your dog is at all times and the smartphone app is a delight without any complex setup or features.

However, if you’re looking for a dog tracker that also monitors activity, sleep and other things then this might not be the right choice for you. Instead, I’d recommend something like the PAWFIT Pet Tracker or the Tractive GPS Pet Tracker, both of which come with activity monitors as well.

For dogs that lead a very active life and aren’t afraid to go and explore, the Weenect is a brilliant accessory. It’s lightweight and compact so it isn’t going to get in your dog’s way and comes with a waterproof and robust design as well as a protective silicone case.

Final Thoughts

If you were to ask me whether I think the Weenect dog tracker was good value for money, my answer would go in two directions. It costs the same as many other trackers on the market but doesn’t come with quite as many features. For this reason, I might be tempted to choose another brand.

On the flip side, I think this is one of the most accurate and user friendly dog trackers out there so I’d be inclined to recommend it to anyone who doesn’t want to overcomplicate keeping tabs on their dog.

All in all, it works very well, is well designed and has enough features that you won’t need to worry about losing your dog.

GPS Dog Tracker FAQs

Do dog trackers work without mobile service?

This largely depends on the device you are using. Some still operate when there is no service while others don’t. This is an important thing to check before buying, especially if you live in a remote area where network coverage isn’t always reliable.

How do GPS dog trackers work?

Global Positioning Systems, commonly known as GPS work by sending and receiving signals from satellites. This creates coordinates which are then sent to your phone as a location, allowing you to find your pet.

Are GPS dog trackers safe for my dog to wear?

As long as the device is not too heavy or your dog doesn’t feel uncomfortable or nervous wearing a collar then there is no reason that a GPS tracker would be unsafe.

How long will the battery last on a dog GPS tracker?

The battery life on your GPS tracker will vary by device. There are some that must be charged every day while others have a battery life of up to one year. What’s more, the battery may last longer when the signal is better as it doesn’t have to work as hard.

Are GPS trackers worth it for dogs?

If you want to ensure the safety of your pet and be able to locate them, should they go missing then a dog GPS tracker is a worthwhile investment. They are also great for monitoring your pet's excercise, distance travelled, calories burned, active and rest hours.

Do dog GPS trackers also work on cats?

Most dog GPS trackers are slightly too large for cats. However, there are some very small versions like the Weenect dog tracker that weighs just 25 grams. This may also be a better idea for smaller dog breeds.
